Showers waterproofed behind the tile, floors sloped to the drain, and a fan that actually vents outside.
Tile is not waterproof, and grout is less so. What keeps a shower from rotting the wall behind it is the layer under the tile: cement board or another rated backer, a waterproofing membrane over it, and a shower floor sloped a quarter inch per foot to the drain so water never sits. We do that layer ourselves and do not skip it to save a day, because a failed shower pan usually means tearing the whole thing out.
A bathroom without an operable window needs an exhaust fan ducted to the outside, not into the attic, and we size it to the room. Valves, drains and supply lines are installed by our Utah-licensed plumbing partner, and lights, fan and GFCI outlets by a licensed electrician, each under their own permit. We handle the demolition, framing, backer, tile, vanity, trim and paint, and keep everyone on one schedule.
